Description:

This internship is designed to give undergraduate students a dynamic educational experience in the marine mammal field.  Students are responsible for a number of support tasks with dolphins and sea lions throughout the internship.  Responsibilities include diet preparation, sanitation, and equipment and facility maintenance.  Opportunities are also available to assist in animal husbandry and open ocean training.

Description:

The Fort Johnson Summer Research Fellowship Program combines formal classroom work with independent research. The program is designed to provide undergraduate students with a modern research experience employing physiological, cellular and molecular techniques to address questions in areas such as environmental bio-indicators, algal physiology, acid-base physiology, respiratory physiology, immunology, population genetics, and evolutionary biology of marine organisms.

Duties:

Students will participate in laboratory projects and conduct research under the supervision of individual mentors. Coursework consists of a five week formal lecture and discussion series centered on areas of current research interest at Fort Johnson (Biology 421, Topics in the Physiology, Cell and Molecular Biology of Marine Organisms, and other related topics). Students will present the results of their research in a mini-symposium and in a written research paper at the end of their stay at Fort Johnson. Academic credit (3 units for Biology 421) can be obtained through the College of Charleston.

Description:

We have created a program that gives students experience with all aspects of modern scientific research, from design to experimentation to reporting. At the same time, we provide insight into the personal qualities of a good researcher, the steps to take on the road to becoming a scientist, and the broader implications of scientific discovery. In order to achieve these goals, students participate in hands-on research in the lab as well as attending weekly seminars.

Duties:

Each intern will be matched with a mentor who is a senior researcher at the Danforth Center. During the first week of the program, interns and mentors will work together to design a project for the summer session. gain hands-on experience in the lab and learn the use of a variety of technologies for research. They will attend workshops in the Center's state-of-the-art support facilities, including the Integrated Microscopy Facility, the Mass Spectrometry and Bioseparations Facility, and the Plant Cell Culture and Transformation Facility, participate in career pathway discussions with experienced researchers and take field trips to local universities and industries with plant or life science focuses, attend weekly seminars on issues related to biotechnology. These discussions are planned to give students insight into the social, political, and economic implications of current research--and to allow them to voice their opinions, as well, and at the end of the summer session, each intern will present a summary of his/her research in the Center's Southwestern Bell auditorium before an audience of scientific peers. A brief written report is also required and students will be carefully guided through the process of preparation of the written report and oral presentation. The presentation and report are a vital part of the education of young sciences.
