The Biology Graduate Program at Penn State

Research in the Biology Department spans almost all aspects of the life sciences. Opportunities for graduate research are equally diverse. Flexibility is a central feature of our graduate program:

null
    • Together with your faculty advisor, you can develop a unique program of study and original research, to suit your background and interests.
    • You can choose to work with a particular faculty member from the beginning. Alternatively you may have the opportunity to rotate through two or three laboratories during the first semester of study and choose and advisor at the end of the rotation period.
    • You can study for a Masters (M.S) or Doctoral (Ph.D) degree.

Looking at our faculty's research areas will help you to identify potential advisors. If you are considering applying, sending us a pre-application form helps us notify relevant faculty of your interest. We also strongly encourage you to email faculty directly before applying. Our faculty are always happy to hear from prospective graduate students and to discuss research projects, availability of positions, program options and program requirements

Most students who work with Biology Department faculty apply to the Biology Graduate Program. However, Biology faculty also participate in Intercollege Graduate Programs: Integrative Biosciences, Cell and Developmental Biology, Ecology, Genetics, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Physiology, Neuroscience, and Plant Biology. Students wishing to apply to one of these programs should note that each has its own requirements and application procedure for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Financial support is typically awarded to students working with Biology Department faculty regardless of which Graduate Program they enter.
